Handicraft workshop “Stories told by Giấy Bồi (Papier-Mâché)”: Creativity from the closest things

Giấy bồi (Papier-Mâché) is a material closely linked to Vietnam’s cultural memory. For a long time, Vietnamese people have used giấy bồi to create Mid-Autumn Festival masks, effigies, folk toys, and decorative items. With its simple yet highly creative crafting technique, giấy bồi not only preserves a rustic beauty but also reflects the traditional handicraft spirit.

In the workshop “Stories Told by Giấy bồi,” organized by the Vincom Center for Contemporary Art (VCCA), children will have the opportunity to explore and personally create their own artwork. Young participants will learn how to utilize familiar recycled materials such as scrap paper, old newspapers, and used plastic bottles to shape, layer the paper, and add colorful decoration. From seemingly discarded materials, each child will complete a product that carries their own story and personal touch.

The handicraft session was guided by instructor Bùi Thị Mai Anh – Master of Fine Arts, specializing in Plastic Arts (Visual Arts), from the Vietnam University of Fine Arts. Ms. Mai Anh has many years of experience teaching art to children in schools and creative centers, while also pursuing her individual art practice. With a strong professional foundation and an approachable method, she constantly inspires students to develop aesthetic thinking, nurture a love for nature, and an appreciation for traditional culture.
